Barre is the workout of choice for models like Romee Strijd, Karlie Kloss, and Martha Hunt. It’s the secret to Natalie Portman’s ballerina figure in Black Swan. It’s also much harder than it looks. Here’s an overview of what you can expect from a barre workout!
Barre doesn’t really have its own specific set of benefits pertaining to health. Like any workout, it can benefit your heart, mind, sleep, and even your skin (hello, healthy glow!)
However, if there is one main benefit to outline here it would be ABS! During a barre workout, you’re constantly pulling in your abs. This helps with balance, form, and posture throughout the workout. The first time I tried barre, it was only a leg workout, but I felt it in my abs the next day, too!
Ballerinas are so svelte and light…they make flying through the air or dancing on their tiptoes look easy. But don’t go to a barre class expecting an easy sweat sesh. Barre is no joke. The movements are small but have a BIG impact. Seriously, 30 reps of the same tiny movement look easy until you’re actually doing it.
Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself!
Honesty, the results come pretty quickly from barre. You work muscles you didn’t even know you had to begin with! For me, I honestly only use this for legs. I find that when you work the legs in a barre workout, you end up working the abs and booty too, which is what I like to focus on anyways. For me, barre is a good way to get quick results when you’re short on time (2 weeks to vacation? YOU NEED BARRE!)
Where to Take a Class
Sometimes it’s hard to find barre classes if you don’t live in a big city. That’s why I like online barre classes or books. As I mentioned before, barre is the workout of choice for models and actresses…and probably 99% of them choose Mary Hellen Bowers as their trainer (she’s the lovely lady in the video above). I started Ballet Beautiful: Total Body Workout a few years ago and I find doing it once a week keeps my body in great shape. It’s no wonder Victoria’s Secret models love this workout!
Check out Mary Hellen Bower’s books for yourself! (Photos contain links to Amazon but you might be able to find these books in a local bookstore, too)
So, Is It Worth the Hype?
Yes. In my opinion, barre is an excellent toning workout. If you’re after long, lean muscles this is the workout you need! Try a few videos on youtube or read product reviews before buying a DVD to make sure it’s right for you first. I tend to do one Ballet Beautiful workout a week to keep my muscles long and toned. I tend to bulk up quickly so this is how I keep
As always, questions are more than welcome. Check out more from the Strengthen Series and comment if you’ve ever tried barre! I’d love to hear your experience!Follow Me:
