Welcome to the Very First Self-Care Series Routine!
The Best Face Forward Routine is pretty self-explanatory. You’re going to be doing a skincare regimen to bring out the natural beauty of your already gorgeous face. Having clean, healthy skin is a huge confidence booster! This is a routine I actually do myself every week or two weeks. Sometimes I mix things up, but I always end up going back to the same products and method.
When you find something that works, why change it right?
I can’t promise this routine will work for everyone’s skin, but I’ll give you suggestions if you have a special concern such as acne or sensitivity to products. Tweak the routine as you see fit, but definitely, give it a try! If you have questions, please comment and I’ll be sure to get back to you!
What You Need:
- clean face towel
- face steamer or bowl of boiling water (be careful though)
- exfoliating mask
- one sheet mask
- candles, comfy clothes, slippers, or anything that makes you relax
Step 1: Cleanse
You need to clean your face before you start anything else. I use Yes To Coconut Micellar Water because its natural, cruelty-free, and it’s cheaper than other products (but does the same job). I have dry skin so that works for me, but if you have sensitive skin, try this one.
Don’t rinse off the product! It’s meant to stay on your face!
Step 2: Exfoliate
This is the fun one! I LOVE the feeling of getting all the dead skin off my face. A little gross, maybe, but your skin will thank you!
There are tons of different exfoliants on the market. Physical exfoliants are the products that feel grainy and basically rip away the dead skin. These are effective if you have lots of dry skin (like me) and are especially effective in the cold winter months. If you have a lot of acne, I don’t recommend using a physical exfoliant because you could actually irritate your skin and cause even more acne.
There are also chemical exfoliants. I know “chemical” is sometimes a bad word in the beauty community but many chemical exfoliants are safe and very effective. These usually contain something like an enzyme. For those of you who don’t know, an enzyme is a protein that carries a specific function, usually to help assist in a chemical reaction.
Personally, I use a micro exfoliator from Biotherm which you leave on for 1 minute then wipe off. Because I tend to break out on my chin, I mainly use this product on my cheeks and forehead and leave my chin alone.
Step 3: Steam
Okay, so this seems a little weird but I grew to love it. People say to steam your face because it opens your pores…well…as a science nerd I’m here to tell you that this is a myth. Pores have no muscles and therefore cannot open. BUT!!! Steaming your face still has benefits! Steam can get under your skin and loosen up any extra hardened oils or debris that might be lying under there. So don’t skip this step!
To be honest, I don’t have a facial steamer. If you’re into that and want to take your skin care to the next level, I’ve heard really good things about this one. I just personally use a bowl of boiling water. I hold my face over it (being careful not to get too close!) and place a towel over my head to hold in the steam. Do this for anywhere from 2-5 minutes. Then pat your face dry with a towel. Don’t wipe your face!
Step 4: Sheet Mask
I’m a face mask junkie! (Maybe I’ll make a list of my favourite effective face masks…because let me tell you, there’s a lot out there that don’t do anything). I collect a ton of them and LOVE trying new ones. I’m actually looking to sign up for a face mask subscription box so if anyone knows of one please leave a comment!
Sheet masks are a celebrity favourite in recent years. They make hilarious Instagram photos, they’re fun and they leave your face glowing! There are different face masks for different skin care needs but I personally use Dr. Jart’s All That Contours Sheet Mask. I have high cheekbones and this mask makes them really pop! After I use this, they’re so defined and model-esque! I think it’s safe to say this is my all-time favourite sheet mask. 10/10 recommend!
Step 5: Relax
While you wait for your mask to do its job, light a candle, put on some cozy slippers and relax! I sometimes watch beauty videos on youtube or browse Instagram. But I NEVER blog or read scientific journals while I’m trying to relax. Not that either of those things is stressful, but that’s what I do for a living. Relaxing should be a hobby all on its own so even if you’re just playing candy crush if you find it relaxing, go for it!
And that’s it! Very simple, very affordable (I made sure to recommend mostly high quality/low price products) and very relaxing. To me, a face mask is the ultimate self-care staple.
