We all know shoes can make or break an outfit. you put on a beautiful dress and realize all you have are old flats or sneakers. Or maybe you’re going for a casual look but you can’t find that perfect bootie to go with your jeans and t-shirt.
I firmly believe that dressing well is a key aspect of self-care. When you put effort into your look, you’ll feel more confident knowing you deserved the time you put into your appearance. This doesn’t mean you need to buy designer clothing or wake up an hour earlier to do hair and makeup. The simple act wearing a fashionable pair of shoes can change your entire look – seriously! And remember, you’re dressing well for you, not for public acceptance. That’s why it’s self-care.
In honour of New York Fashion Week, I decided to post my top picks for shoes (under $50) so you can get in on the fashion-week action without breaking the bank!

Wild Diva Lounge Carmela Bootie • $32.97
These boots give me such an Elsa Hosk vibe! They’re ultra stylish but with a casual vibe brought on by the denim material and the peep-toe detail. The lace-up style is gorgeous, too. These boots have potential to make your legs look super long if paired with a skinny style jean of a similar shade. The whole monochrome look tends to elongate body shapes. If that’s what you’re going for, these should be in your closet.
PUMA Suede Platform Sneakers • $44
These are a short girl’s best-kept secret. The shoes have a bit of a platform so they make you look taller without a heel. These are perfect with a pair of short shorts in the summer or leggings in the winter. The pink colour is gorgeous and you’ll definitely be seeing more of it throughout 2018.
Ziginy Savida Pointed Toe Bootie • $39.97
Sleek and classic. I’m super surprised these boots are under $50. Pair them with your favourite black skinnies and a half-tucked t-shirt for the ultimate “not-trying-too-hard-but-still-gorgeous” aesthetic.
Steve Madden Editor Block Heel Bootie • $38.99
These are such a cute statement piece. As these are quite similar to boots Ariana Grande would wear, let’s recreate her image and just say to wear them with a flippy skirt and crop top. If you follow her on any social media platform, you’ll see that the look is obviously working for her. So try it for yourself! In the winter try them with a pair of light wash jeans and a solid colour top. You’ll want the boots to the be the focus of your outfit here so avoid flashy patterns.
Vince Camuto Katleen Peep Toe Bootie • $44.99
These are a perfect spring bootie. The peep-toe is perfect to show off a pedicure (which you treated yourself too because you f*cking deserved it). The wooden style block heel is something I love in a pair of booties. Less chance of falling on my face while still looking fab. I would personally opt to wear them with a skirt but I have a feeling they go with tons of other looks.
Converse Chuck Taylor Pro Leather LP Ox Sneakers • $36
Converse is one of my favourite shoe brands. The style is a classic! They have SO many great colours but the white is a Swedish street style must-have for every woman. Wear them with a flannel and jeans and you’ve got yourself the most classic Pinterest-worthy casual outfit on the internet. I wear them to my college classes with baggy sweaters and messy hair and still manage to look cute. I know why shoes may not seem like they go with much….but the truth is they pretty much go with everything.
Fergalicious Stretch Knit Peep Toe Bootie • $39.97
Okay, these boots are the cutest! For some reason, these seemingly simple boots end up being a statement piece. These are the perfect affordable boss-bitch bootie. So fierce, so chic, so stylish!
Adidas by Stella McCartney Slides • $50
Not a lot needs to be said about these shoes. The slider style will always be a go-to for me because when I have a lazy day, I still want to look nice and these shoes give off the perfect fit-chick vibe. I wear usually them with loose athletic shorts or cute crop leggings. They also go great with a pair of cinched-ankle joggers. For a top, I usually choose a flowy crop-top or fitted sports tank.
TOMS Women’s Cap-Toe Canvas Shoe • $29
Every girl should have a pair of TOMS. They’re literally my favourite go-to casual everyday shoe. They go with leggings, jeans, even skirts and dresses for a modern street style look. If you’re looking for a pair of shoes to wear around campus, running errands, or meeting a girlfriend for coffee, this is your shoe.
