This post has been a long time coming. I’ve been talking about my skin routine for a while on here and on social media so today, I’m finally delivering on my promise of letting you know what I do to keep my complexion glowing! My skin isn’t perfect. But the things in this routine are certainly helping to give me the best skin possible.
For reference, my skin is:
- slightly sensitive
- prone to breakouts around period
- mild rosacea around my cheeks and nose (which has almost disappeared since my I started my new skincare routine though)
- acne on the chin (also has subsided since new skincare routine)
Before we get started, you should know that some of the links in this post are affiliate links! As evidenced by the half-empty bottles of product in my photos, you can see what I truly use and love all these products. If you purchase using a link, I might collect a commision from the sale at no extra cost to you. For more information check out my legal page.
First Things First
Let me first start by saying that my diet is what changed my skin the most. I think I’ll write a separate post for skin care related nutrition (let me know in the comments if you’d like to read that) but for now, let me just state that a balanced healthy diet is a girl’s best friend. Especially when it comes to skin and beauty.
Another thing I want to mention is that beauty products should typically be added in order of lightest (most liquidy) to the heaviest (like creams). Also, you should always wait for each product to soak in a bit before you apply the next. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get started!
I LOVE micellar water. I don’t like using face wash twice a day, so I usually use it at night to take off mascara (I don’t wear foundation because my skin care routine keeps my complexion nice and smooth) and any pollution in my skin from the day. Micellar water is great in the morning because it’s quick and still does its job. So, I’ve tried quite a few but I honestly don’t notice a difference between
a $12 bottle and a $30 bottle. So this is something to save your money on. I personally use Garnier Micellar All-in-1 Cleansing Water for All Skin Types Including Sensitive. I like it most because its suitable for sensitive skin. The cheapest place I’ve found for it is Amazon so click on the link and it’ll take you to the best deal.
Honestly, sometimes I skip this step. If I’m in a rush in the morning, I skip to a serum and wait until the evening to use my toner. I’ve recently been using Biotherm for this. I switch between collections with Biotherm. They always come out with something new that I want to try but to be honest, nothing has ever been better than the Biotherm Biosource 24H Hydrating & Tonifying Toner. Next time I need toner I’m going to go straight for that one because it’s better than the one I have currently (also form Biotherm). It’s for normal/combination skin but they also have one for dry skin.
Okay. This serum is incredible. you probably already know what I’m talking about so I’ll just get right to it. The Ordinary – Buffet is SO AMAZING! This is a must-try and it’s literally in everyone’s budget (its around $12 depending on where you buy it). At first, I didn’t notice any visual results but the texture of my skin changed to be very smooth. After a couple week, I noticed the redness in my skin go away so my complexion is glowing. My skin is also plumper. Just try it, seriously. Treat yourself, do yourself a favour and get this product!! You won’t be sorry, it’s actually incredible. THIS LINK will get you the best deal.
Okay…This is where you want to spend a little more money. I use Biotherm and tried finding a good dupe. the closest I could find was Garnier Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel-Cream and though I love Garnier for other things, it just can’t compete with the Biotherm Skin Oxygen Moisturizer. I still linked the gel because it’s still good…just not as good as the Biotherm. This moisturizer is a gel which I absolutely love for the mornings. I hate the feeling of heavy creams on my face all day so this one is a perfect fit for me. The price is pretty much the same from any store you buy form so I linked to a seller who I saw had great reviews for shipping so if you buy, you actually get it on time!
That’s it for the morning! Sometimes I use a Biotherm Aquasource CC gel (yes, a gel!) for a tiny bit of coverage but I usually don’t need it. I was going to link that product using but to be honest, the cheapest price is at Sephora (which I don’t have access to the link to). So if you want to buy, definitely get it from there.
My evening routine is similar to my morning routine so to save time I’ll do this:
- Cleanser: Biotherm Skin Oxygen Cleanser
- Toner same as above: Biotherm Biosource 24H Hydrating Toner
- Spot Treatment: Peter Thomas Roth Acne Spot Treatment (MUST HAVE if you get hormonal acne. This always gets rid of my period breakouts overnight and it’s only $25).
- Serum: The Ordinary – Buffet but I change it up for my evening routine. I like to use the Biotherm Life Plankton Essence before The Ordinary. I do this because it is a thinner serum/essence and should be applied to the skin before a thicker one. There really was a difference in my skin after seven days, as the product promises. It’s expensive though so if you’re only going with one, get The Ordinary.
- Moisturizer: I actually don’t use the Biotherm for this step. In the evening I like to apply a thicker moisturizer. My grandma (82 years old) has been Nivea for her whole life…so now I do too. She honestly has the plumpest, most glowing skin. Not just for someone her age, for anyone. 82 years of proof that isNivea a good choice for a moisturizer even if it’s not a “luxury” brand.
Once a week I do a really good exfoliation and a face mask. I’ve used different exfoliants before for both body and face. I like to save my money on this, as you know from the Body Love Self-care Routine posted last week. They honestly all work the same. So for my face, I use St. Ives Fresh Skin Exfoliating Apricot Facial Scrub. It’s under $6 and works just as good as any other one. I sometimes use the Biotherm Pure-fect Mask for an exfoliator and deep extraction but mainly on my chin where I break out the most. This isn’t really a mask, It’s more of a quick way to get rid of an impeding zit.
For Facemasks, I’ve actually recently signed up for FaceTory. I don’t know if you’ve heard of them but OMG they’re subscription program is so cool. You get 4 masks every month for less than the cost of a single Dr. Jart mask (sorry Dr. Jart, I will always love your contour sheet mask). The Four-ever Fresh Subscription is the one I have and it’s 4 masks a month for $6 but they have the Seven Lux Subscription too where you can get 7 masks in a month for $16 a month. These masks are different kinds, so not just sheet masks but the gel ones and more luxurious types. I’m loving just my regular 4-mask subscription though.
I hope you enjoyed my morning and night skin routines! These products honestly changed my skin. Let me know in the comments if you’ve tried any of these products or if you’d like to! Sorry for the bad pictures. I meant to retake them but I’ve had three midterms this week. Life of a student…
