Welcome to the Newest Article in the Strengthen Series: HIIT
I had my doubts about HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) when I first read about it burning TONS of fat. I tend to be a skeptic of most things until I see the science-backed research. Well, in this case, I did my own research. I’ve been doing HIIT once a week for a month and today I’m going to tell you about my results!
According to Pinterest infographics (which I see EVERYWHERE) about High-Intensity Interval Training, using this workout should be effective even if done even just once a week. Now, of course, you need to combine this with other workouts too so it’s likely that not ALL the benefits are from HIIT alone. I’ll go over my workout routine in another post but typically, it’s one really hard workout every week, and three or four workouts that I squeeze into my busy schedule. Here are my observations on days I did HIIT workouts.
- more energy throughout the day
- drank more water
- felt happier
- slept better
The four points above are technically results, but I’ll leave them listed as potential benefits. What I want to talk about in this section is what I didn’t see.
I didn’t notice things that people sometimes claim HIIT can do like give you better skin, encourage extreme fat loss, etc. In fact, my weight stayed the same the entire month and my muscles are still as toned as they were at the start. I honestly don’t think HIIT is the magic workout everyone thinks it is. I work out 4-5 days per week and my usual routine was doing the same thing that my newly adopted HIIT routine did.
That said, I only did it once per week. I wouldn’t recommend HIIT more than two or three days per week unless you really have your nutrition on point though.
So, Is it Worth the Hype?
Though I didn’t see the weight loss that HIIT supposedly promises, I DID see an increase in enthusiasm to exercise. That, in itself, should be motivation enough to try out HIIT. It was super fun, you can fit in a really good workout into a short amount of time and you can do it anywhere! This is definitely a must-try workout. Just don’t do it to expecting fat to just melt off of you. That isn’t a realistic expectation and I wish people would stop exaggerating HIIT workouts. Just do it because it’s fun!
My Favourite Video
It’s no secret to anyone that knows me that Tone It Up is by far my favourite fitness brand. They have so many workouts and articles so I naturally turned to them first when looking for videos for this experiment. This was my favourite one:
Try out the workout and let me know in the comments below if it TOTALLY kicked your butt!
