I got nominated for a Liebster Award by Mackenzie and Kiara from the travel blog: Wandering Wombmates. These babes are twins and travel the world, posting lovely photos and a few lifestyle posts sprinkled in here and there. Thank you, ladies, for the kind nomination.
I’m thrilled to answer these questions and I’ve nominated tow more bloggers that I think are deserving of the award at the bottom of this post with 11 new questions for them to answer.
1. If you had to eat one cuisine for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Definitely Chinese food. I was going to say Indian food because it’s my favourite but Chinese has far more variety and you can make it healthy if you get the right items!
2. How long have you been blogging and why did you start?
I started blogging last month actually. I saw a need for a more practical approach to wellness on the internet. The whole crystals and sage thing really isn’t science-based and these types of hippy-dippy trends can give wellness a reputation for being bogus and phoney. But the truth is, there are a LOT of science-backed wellness trends out there. I’m a big advocate for self-care and healthy living so when I couldn’t find very many actually informative health sites I decided, as a science student, to use my ever-expanding knowledge to make my own.
3. How do you focus on getting traffic to your blog?
I think being genuine on social media sends out a positive message and people will naturally find you when you are commenting and liking on things that you actually have an interest in, rather than for the sake of driving traffic. This probably sounds pretentious, but it’s not all about the numbers.
4. What is the best book you have read recently and why?
I recently read Tone It Up’s book Fit, Fierce and Fabulous. I LOVED it. I didn’t necessarily follow every day exactly as planned but I thought many of the exercises they have you complete were very thoughtful and effective. It really gave me the motivation kick I needed. EVERYONE loses motivation sometimes and I’d recommend this book next time you lose yours.
5. Where are you planning on travelling to next?
I’m going to go home to Thunder Bay, ON in April to see my family! My little sister is turning 20 years old so I’ve got a surprise for her!
6. Favourite and least favourite parts of blogging?
I love blogging because it gives me a voice. For whatever reason, people tend to trust what is on the internet more than they trust what is said to them. And often times, people don’t even pick up a book to validate what they’ve heard. Having a blog allows me to create truthful content and write it in a way that speaks to people who don’t necessarily have a science background. Everyone is good at different things but everyone should be able to understand why a superfood is good for them, why they should practice self-care and how to use those things to their advantage. So I love blogging because it matters to me that people are exposed to truthful, real information.
Least favourite part is that people honestly sometimes do not give a shit that I’ve put so much work into researching and testing the content I put out and immediately dismiss it. It makes me upset that they will not even attempt to listen to my point of view, especially when I work so hard to be objective before forming an opinion about important topics like GMOs, vegan diets, etc. It shouldn’t bother me much but its hard to see my hours of research got to waste sometimes.
7.What’s something you wish you knew before you began blogging?
That it takes hours and hours of research, writing, and editing to create content. And it still will ever be perfect haha.
8. Best lesson you learned from blogging?
That no matter how polite you are trying to get someone to see your side of an opinion, they will often be rude just because you’re trying to say something that they may not agree with. If I try to show scientific evidence, it’s never to prove someone wrong and make them upset. It’s to say “see, you have nothing to worry about.” The best thing I learned as a blogger is to just not engage with people who will refuse to have an adult conversation with me. I’ve been told to go kill myself because I had a different opinion, despite my attempts to maintain a polite voice the entire conversation. So what I learned is not to be so naive that everyone on the internet is as nice as the people I surround myself with in real life.
9. Favourite inspirational quote?
“You are enough.”
10. What is something on your bucket list?
I don’t really have a bucket list. I’ve travelled a lot as a volunteer before and I think I’ve seen plenty of the world. I guess what I’d really like to see in my life is a long career as a respected biotechnologist. I want to do meaningful work, so rather than aim for a job in the food/beverage industry or somewhere in the cosmetic industry (where there are many science jobs), I would love to work in medical research. My DREAM would be to work on a research team to cure Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva, a horrific genetic disorder that turns muscle mass into bone.
11. What is your next big goal for your blog?
I would like to see my Wellness Weekend Challenge be a success. I’m hosting it with Sanne Vander and I wrote it because I think if every woman just dedicated one entire weekend to herself, she could do incredible things. She could renew her motivation to love her body, and in turn learn to love exercise, clean eating and self-care. I put lots of work into this challenge (even using science to formulate recipes that give you maximum nutrient absorbance…I know, I’m a geek). I just want everyone to learn to love themselves. My journey to loving my body was a long road but one that was soooo worth the effort.
I would like to thank Wandering Wombmates once again for nominating me. I nominate
